Religion is a powerful force, either good or bad. In 1948, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that religious instruction in a public school is unconstitutional. However, the First Amendment guarantees that we have the freedom to engage in personal religious expression, including wearing religious clothing. However, can teacher be fired for starting the day with a prayer in a public school? Though the First Amendment guarantees the freedom of personal religious expression, a teacher should be fired for starting the day with a prayer in a public school. A teacher should be fired for starting the day with a prayer in a public school for three reasons; unconstitutional to the Supreme Court declaration and Constitution, favoring a set of religious beliefs, and because the is controlled by the government. The first reason a teacher should be fired for starting the day with a prayer in a public school is that it’s unconstitutional to the Supreme Court declaration and Constitution. In the article, Your Right To Religious Freedom written by ACLA in 2017, the author states “No.Prayers, scriptural readings and loud speakers devotionals violate the First Amendment because they promote religion.” This would be an example of an unconstitutional act. The First Amendment states that religious practices aren’t allowed in public schools because they are runned by government. Not only starting the day with a prayer is unconstitutional but violates the Supreme Court declaration. According to the article, Details on State Prayer in Public School Laws written by FindLaw in 2017, the author states “The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against school-led or school-sponsored prayer.” The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against religious practices at public schools like the First Amendment. However, just because the First Amendment and Supreme Court declare that this is unconstitutional doesn’t mean that it’s completely illegal. A teacher might be able to start the day with a prayer, depending on whether or not it’s promoting religion. In a public school a teacher will be fired for starting the day with a prayer because the Supreme Court and First Amendment declared it. The second reason a teacher should be fired for starting the day with a prayer in a public school is favoring a set if religious beliefs. Each Person has their own religious beliefs, that they can practice. When a teacher starts the day with a prayer at a public schools, they are forcing students to worship a certain religions. According to the article, Prayer in Public Schools by ADL written in 2016, the author states “Students have the right to engage in voluntary individual prayer that is not coercive and does not substantially disrupt the schools’ educational missions and activities. The students have the right to pray as long as the prayer doesn’t disrupt the school’s activities. Although, the students may have the right to pray, this could be a violation to their religion. Students may also not be excused from, if the teacher does start with a prayer. In the earticle, Prayer in Public Schools written by ADL in 2016, the author states, It is legally irrelevant if the prayer or bible is voluntary, or if students may be excused from the activity or classroom during the prayers.” This evidence explains that students cannot be excused when a teacher prays because both actions are prohibited by the First Amendment. Though, the teacher can’t pray in the first place, rejects the need of being excused. The third reason a teacher should be fired for starting for starting the day with a prayer is because the schools is controlled by the government. Public schools are runned by the government. In a public school, the school boards cannot have schedule prayers as a part of their meetings. According to the article, School Board Prayer written by State/Church FAQ in 2014. The author states “ SChool boards cannot schedule prayer as a part of their meetings. If the school was private then prayers may be allowed, Even when a prayer is allowed from the Supreme Court, the decision does not grant approval. According to the article, School Board Prayer written by State/Church FAQ, the author states “While the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed prayers to be held as part of state legislative and local council meeting, those decisions do not grant blanket approval for prayer by school boards.” Although some school boards allow prayers in a public school, it’s the Supreme Court’s decision to approve the prayers. In conclusion the question whether or not a teacher should be fired for starting the day with a prayer is yes because of three reasons; unconstitutional to the Supremes Court declaration, favoring a religious belief, and the school is controlled by the government. Everyone has their own religious beliefs but cannot force or hurt people with their practices. Ethical ideas don’t have to cause a paradox in society.

Google is the new technology that negatively impacts our brains. Google is a great source but can also be a distraction. When we use the internet, such as Google, we are not encoding all the information into our brains. In fact according to Source B, 90 percent of people are suffering from digital amnesia. The other two sources, A and C, also state reasons on whether or not Google is negatively affecting our intelligence. Based on all the background information Google is affecting our intelligence negatively. Google is affecting our intelligence negatively because three reasons not finding ways to encode information, not thinking deeply, and we are not creating knowledge. Google is affecting our intelligence negatively because we are not finding ways to encode information. According to Source C the author states “With the internet everything is just a click away. When we don’t know something, we are primed to turn to the computer to rectify the situation.” Since everything on Google is a click away, our brain will not encode all the information. Our brain will change over time because of this impact and we will be negatively affecting our intelligence. Google is making us work less as well as our brains. This can create patterns affecting our intelligence. Another example of this statement would be in Article C which the author states “When the information is saved externally , we usually don’t memorize it, but rather the place we can find it.” Because of this issue, we don’t encode the information, but rather know where to find it whenever we want to. Our brain is not encoding the information at all, just the location. This can be affecting our brains negatively. Although, some people will remember where to find the information and the information itself, most people will tend to remember the location and no data. Google is affecting our intelligence negatively because we are not thinking deeply enough. According to Source A the author state “you’ll never think deeply if you’re always Googling, texting, and surfing.” Google and social media both negatively impact our intelligence because the internet never gives us a deep thought of the information. We do not truly analyse the information enough to get a good understanding of it. Another example of this statement would be in Article A. In Article A the author states “The faster we zip across the Web Clicking links and skimming words and pictures, the more ads Google is able to show us and the more money it makes.” Most people just skim through Google and do not get a deep understanding of the information causing our brain to weaken and negatively affect our intelligence. Skimming through links and articles does not make our brain grow and this issue may cause trends in our brain to become less intelligent. Though, some people do get a good understanding of the information, most people do not. Google is affecting our intelligence negatively because we are not creating knowledge. In Article B the author states “If we’re not forming rich connections in our minds we’re not creating knowledge.” Using Google does not form good connections with creating knowledge because Google information is a click away. Another example of this would be in Article A which the author states “When we use our computers and our cell-phones all the time, we’re always distracted. Google is a big distraction in our brain and we are not acquiring knowledge. Though, some people acquire knowledge through Google, some people use it for a distraction. In conclusion Google affects our intelligence negatively because three reasons, not finding ways to encode information, not thinking deeply, and we are not creating knowledge. This idea parallels with using the internet as well. Some people’s ethical ideas show that they could use Google as a helpful source or not.
Montserrat Orozco, Julia Guillen, Carlos Alderete, Arian Godinez Language Arts, Period ¾ December 18, 2017 Junk Food Essay
Junk food is creating a crisis in America. 300,000 people die each year from obesity or overweight. Children with obesity have a high risk factor of heart disease. Millions of dollars are spent on obesity-related healthcare costs. To stop this, schools need to stop selling junk food in cafeterias. Junk food should not be sold for three reasons, obesity, heart disease, and the loss of money. The first reason why school cafeterias should stop selling junk food is because of obesity. According to an article titled, “Should States Ban Junk Food In Schools?,” it states, “ Obesity is a health epidemic across our country, and we have a responsibility as a government and a society to do all we can to promote good nutrition and healthy eating so we can reverse this alarming trend.” This is why schools should not allow junk food in schools, junk food causes obesity and if schools don’t put a stop to it, children will just keep eating it. Schools should teach students that junk food can cause obesity and should stop selling it. This doesn’t mean children should stop eating it for life, it just means that they should try eating healthier food so that in the future they won’t have obesity. Schools are the number one place to teach a child about obesity. Many researchers have discovered that junk food and obese create morbidly obese. In, “ Another Junk Policy,” it states, “In a recent study, researchers at Cornell University found that the relationship between junk food and obesity is driven primarily by morbidly obese.” Instead of selling junk food, schools should give healthier food like carrots or apples. Children have to learn that obesity can be a really bad experience to have in the future, this is why they should eat healthier and even if schools don’t ban junk food, children can stop buying it. Obesity can also be related to heart disease or diabetes. Schools should stop selling junk food to prevent obesity and heart disease. The second reason why schools should stop selling junk food is to prevent heart disease. According to an infographic it states, “ 70% of obese children have at least one risk factor for heart disease thus 39% have at least two or more risk factors.” Therefore, schools should stop selling junk food to prevent heart disease. Everyone should be alert of heart disease because this can lead to death, which no one wants. To impede from dying from heart disease, schools should stop selling junk food and students should stop buying it. In future generations we are going to have a lot of people with obesity or heart disease if schools don’t stop selling junk food. Anything that is related to chips, candy, or sugar drinks is considered junk food in schools. According to an article titled, “ Battle Intensifies To Keep Junk Food Out Of School Lunch Rooms,” it states, “ Two workshops were held for teenagers on the dangers of sugar beverages and the climbing rates of type two diabetes.” The more schools give sugar beverages, the more heart disease there are going to be in the future. If schools want healthier and well concentrated students they should stop selling junk food. To cure these diseases or illnesses people need to pay a lot of money. Many people are losing a lot of money just to cure their obese or type two diabetes. We need to stop this. The third reason why schools should stop selling junk food is to impede from wasting a lot of money. Many people that buy junk food tend to lose money without noticing. For example, in an infographic titled, “ Norton Center Infographic, “ it states, “ In 2011, American spent $168,000,000 on fast food… that’s the same amount of money we spend in obesity-related expenses or nearly enough money to end world hunger.” All that money being wasted could have been used for something else but since schools won’t stop selling junk food we can’t do anything about it. This same amount of money or even more can also be used for overweight according to an article. In the infographic it states, “ By 2018, the US will spend $344,000,000,000 on obesity-related healthcare costs.” In the future we are going to be wasting a lot of money just to cure obesity. We can do something about this, schools should stop selling junk food. No one should waste this much money for buying junk food and then curing it. All of us should be in this together, we can all prevent losing a lot of things. Schools should stop selling junk food. In conclusion, junk food should not be sold in schools. Junk food should not be sold in schools because of three reasons obesity, heart disease, and the loss of money. Some people agree or disagree that junk food should be sold in schools. The ideas of junk food being sold in public schools relates to the crisis in America caused by obesity. Ethics show that millions of dollars are wasted on obesity-related healthcare casts that could end world hunger. The big idea of why junk food should not be sold in schools is because it causes a crisis on America. Unanswered questions that remain are how obesity is going to end and how the crisis in America will end as will?
