October 19th, 2017 - Reading Log #3 // How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury by Cressida Cowell Topic Choice 1 - Character
The darkest hour has came for the human and dragon race. It all comes down to one boy who has nothing to show but everything to fight for. This boy is ready and is the strongest hero he could be. He might not sound like a normal hero. A scrawny boy with no weapons or riding dragon. This boy’s name is Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. Today is the Doomsday of Yule and the dragon’s faith relies on Hiccup. Today the secret of the dragon jewel will be given to the king. The dragon jewel has the power to destroy dragons. The devious villain Alvin the Treacherous has become the king and will surely use this power. Hiccup must become the king and save the all the dragons. Hiccup is a dynamic character. At first, way back in Hiccup’s memoirs, Hiccup never thought he would be a hero and just wanted to live life without trouble. But now, even though Hiccup has lost his memory, he sees that he is a hero and could save the dragons. People have been talking about Hiccup’s adventures. They see that Hiccup is the king they need and with this Hiccup believes in himself. “Maybe he really was the Hero that people though he was” (pg.64). Hiccup’s quest is clear but can he become the king and save the dragon’s in this final book? “There is only one day left now for Hiccup to become the KIng and save the dragons. One day more… CAN HICCUP SAVE THE DRAGON?’ (pg. 3).
September 25, 2017-Reading Log #2 // How to Betray a Dragon’s Hero by Cressida Cowell Topic Choice 1-Plot
The book starts in the mountains. The mountains are called the Murderous Mountains, after the Meathead tribe. There is a dragon rebellion so below the mountains is a burned forest. The hero of this story is Hiccup. Hiccup is with his friends Fishlegs and Camicazi. Hiccup is also with his dragons, Toothless, Wodensfang, Windwalker, and the Deadly Shadow. Hiccup hears someone calling help so they hop on the Deadly Shadow and go check it out. The person calling help is on a ice raft on a moving river. He is heading to dangerous rebellion dragons. There is also a riding and small dragon on the ice raft. The small dragon is a called a Hogfly. The plot is important because Hiccup has to save the person and dragon before they become a snack for the dragons. This scene is happening at night so it’s very chilly. Hiccup then sees who that person is on the ice raft. It’s his cousin Snotface Snotlout. Snotlout has always embarrassed Hiccup in front of everyone, broke his stuff, and beaten him and his friend Fishlegs a lot. Hiccup wants to save Snotlout even though his friends don’t want to. This creates even more conflict. This plot shows how good a person Hiccup is. Snotlout has done a lot of harm to Hiccup, but Hiccup still wants to save his cruel cousin. Hiccup and his friends argue a lot to help Snotlout or not. In the end they decide to help Snotlout. On page 27 it states “Let's save him,” whispered Hiccup. “Oh brother,” moaned Fishlegs. “I know you’re right but oh brother…” They better be fast now. Camicazi ties a rope around the Deadly Shadow and climbs down to help Snotlout. They are nearing the rebellion dragons. The Hogfly then flies over to the rebellion dragons. The dragons then wake up when they hear the Hogfly barking. On page 33 it states “WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!” barked the happy Hogly” Oh dear who knows how it will all turn out.
September 20, 2017-Reading Log #1 // How to Sieze a Dragon's Jewel by Cressida Cowell Topic Choice 2-Conflict The book I’m reading is “How To Seize A Dragon’s Jewel”. The book is the tenth book in the series how to train your dragon. The conflict in the book is immense. The hero of this story is named Hiccup who is in a very tough situation. Hiccup had gotten a slave mark by freeing slaves from a tribe called the Wanderers. The slave mark is an impression of shame and a slave for life. Hiccup’s slave mark has been revealed to everyone and Hiccup’s father and friends have gotten that mark of shame too. Hiccup has made an arch enemy back in his memoirs. This arch enemy is Alvin the Treacherous, a devious man, who has been accompanied with his mother, Excellinor the Witch. Alvin became the King in waiting of the Wilderwest. Alvin has a hatred so strong for Hiccup and has told everyone to kill him on sight. A dragon rebellion has begun and the dragons are planning to wipe out the human race. Now Hiccup is an Outcast who was to watch out for humans and dragons. This isn’t just an important event in the story but a very serious conflict. Hiccup has though his ways out of many conflicts but now this conflict will change his entire life. Hiccup will never live the same as he once did. Hiccup is a slave and Outcast. Once a slave always a slave. When this horrible rebellion between the dragons and humans are over, humans and dragons will never live together again. The time is tough for Hiccup but he is on a quest to save the people and the dragons. Hiccup has to learn how to live differently and his mind will change after this situation. This conflict is external. Hiccup has been risking his life everyday he lives. The humans and dragons both want to see his heart stop and blood dripping. Some evidence of Hiccup’s conflict would be on page 6. On page 6 it states “Risking his life after day undoing the dragon traps the Vikings had been setting for the dragons and constantly running away from the humans and the terrifying hunting dragons of the dragon rebellion had really taken it out of him”(6). This evidence shows how immense the conflict is for Hiccup. Hiccup’s arch enemy Alvin the Treacherous won’t make it any easier. On page 193 it states “Please, let me kill Hiccup, Mother. “Of course you can kill Hiccup, Alvin, my darling, and you’ll do a lovely, creative job of it, I know said the witch(193). Alvin and his mother both hate Hiccup and will kill Hiccup any chance they get. Is this the end of Hiccup? Can Hiccup rescue the people and dragons without getting killed? It all has to end somewhere.
